Flying into the sun (*)

Tucson, Az

Photoshopped only to crop, resize and adjust contrast slightly - white is still white, but very dark grey is now black.

I'm having one of those weeks where photographic opportunities keep presenting themselves to me.

---

Since I first posted this picture, I've found out more about how I came to be able to take it. The local air force base to me (Davis Monthan) is holding an event all weekend for heritage flyers to practice their routines before the air show calendar.

So far I have seen and photographed formations of, the P38 and F16; 3 P51's; A F86, A-10 and Mustang; 2 Mustangs and an F4; 2 Mustangs and a P47; F-16 and a Mustang; F15, mustang and P38 and other formations. I think it was to practice getting jets and props to fly in formation.

Which brings me back to this photo. Both planes are flying in formation, but while the P38 is going quickly for it's design, the F16 is almost stalling, hence it's nose up attitude.

So I have another day tomorrow to listen to the sound of merlin engines flying low over the city, and I've found a great new vantage point near the end of the runway too. Today I got this shot of the P38 (just cropped, the detail on the full version is superb)

Pbase seems to be playing up and I can't view the image myself, so I'm putting a copy of it here in the comments.

I thought of that movie (can't remember the name now) about the jet equipped aircraft carrier than hits some sort of time vortex and ends up off of Hawaii on December 6th, 1942 . . . And the transition of the sky in this shot seems to fit that theme too. Nice. Cindy

Thanks, it's been a great weekend for watching planes. I've updated the text above. I think this is the only P38 in the world. Richard

I love this shot & I hope you win! I had no idea there were any P-38's flying. Where was this shot? I would have loved to have been there!

You're having a very good week if this shot is any representation! A P-38 and an F-16 in formation is a rare sight indeed.
