Bixby Creek Bridge on Highway 1

San Jose, California

This coastal bridge was built in 1932 and it is one of the most-photograph structure in the West Coast. Besides being one of the most beautiful tourirst attraction, the bridge has many historical significants of its time. There are many shots of this bridge, but I'd like to present it at a different view angle.

I am glad that this picture brought back alot of memory for you. The actual bridge is just a little curvy but because of the angle that I choose, it looks as if the bridge has a very sharp turn.

This bridge reminds me of what our family calls the "Grease Bridge" in Guatemala. It's a bridge that spans a gully on the highway between Guatemala City and the East coast. It's built with a curve just like the one pictured. One day, a truck hauling grease crashed on the bridge, dumping all its grease on the bridge. Personnel were dispatched with push brooms to sweep the grease to one side (it was several inches deep) long enough for traffic to drive by. On February 4, 1976 a huge earthquake struck the country, and this bridge fell to the river bed because it's located right over the fault line. This road is one of the two majore arteries in the country, so this collapse was a huge problem. A temporary bridge set up by the Bailey bridge company was placed deeper into the gulley. Traffic could go through, but 18-wheelers had a heck of a time negotiating the sharp turn, sometimes taking minutes per truck. The result was delays of many hours to get through. A whole mini-economy sprung up around the bridge.

whao, I feel like I am going to fall off the side of the road. I love this shot, very effective.
