I had the same thought about the pier initially, though it does work as a good "lead in" to the figure. However, the concrete bench (?) could also serve as a good lead in.
Personally, I think I would have preferred the pier to end before him.
I do like the composition otherwise, though.

Interesting, the pier position didn't seem to bother me at all, but next time I will try different positions. I spent a couple hours at the beach looking for shots, but this one I got through the passanger window on the drive out while stopped at a stop sign, so I could not change the angle.

It always figures the shot you use is the one taken at the "last minute" when you say, "hey, that's a neat one." :)

Thanks for the comment and suggestion! :) - RO

I like this, but the way the pier dead-ends in the middle of the subject distracts me. I think I'd prefer if it ended before the subject or went all the way though.

Thanks guys for the nice comments. Almost all my photography is emotionaly driven (family, memories, etc.) Hopefully if my 10D is ready from Irvine soon enough, I will be able to squeeze some more in before the challenge is over. Thanks again! :) - Ralph

Ralph,
In looking at the images in this challenge, this is one that really embodies the spirit of the subject. I like the setting, as it evokes so many memories of my youth.

Ralph: I love the composition, the use of black and white, and the resulting mood. The grain also complements the effect nicely. Well conceived and well done! -- Joe Reilly

Hi Ralph,

This is my kind of photo! I would have shot this in a heartbeat (in fact, I've shot similar over the past couple days). Contemplation is such a great photo subject.

Excellent composition and contrast, both isolate the subject and give it impact.

Nice job.
