The following 2 subspecies are being recognized:
Vanellus tectus tectus - Southwest-Mauritania south to Guinea-Bissau, west to Eritrea, Ethiopia and Uganda;
Vanellus tectus latifrons - South-Somalia to East-Kenya and Northcentral-Tanzania.
