The following 2 subspecies are being recognized:
Vanellus crassirostris crassirostris - Nigeria to South-Sudan south to East-DR Congo and North-Tanzania;
Vanellus crassirostris leucopterus - South-DR Congo to Malawi south to Botswana and Northeast-South Africa.
