498 Old County Road, identified in the Westport Historical Commission's 1987 pamphlet "The Head of Westport" as "A 3/4 rustic Georgian built around 1775 by John Gifford [....] a "coastal trader under duress, or a smuggler in British eyes. This was the first large house at the Head [....] It was an inn for many years. George E. Gifford made coffins and ran a funeral business from the barn."
