Romy Vitug: Master Cinematographer

Creative vision flows in his veins: did you know that renowned cinematographer Romeo "Romy" Vitug is the son of Honesto T. Vitug - considered
as the "Dean of Philippine PhotoJournalism" - who in his time was the Official Philippine Presidential Photographer between 1936 to 1962?

Romy (a.k.a. "Remy" to close family and friends) - who onced aspired to be a lawyer - became a Hall of Fame Awardee during
the 2000 CineManila International Film Festival in recognition for his continued excellence in the field of cinematography.

On December 1, 2007 the Silverlens Foundation Inc. (SLF) in association with the Silverlens Gallery hosted a panel discussion about the
"Golden Age of Philippine Magazine Journalism" with photographers Romy Vitug, Ed Santiago, and writer Eugenia D. Apostol. It served
as the opening activity for the exhibit "5 PHOTOGRAPHERS: A Tribute to 5 Pioneering Masters of Philippine Photojournalism" (that
initially opened on November 22) consisting of photographs from five of the country’s foremost photojournalists: Mario Co,
Silverio Enriquez, Joe Gabor, Ed Santiago and of course - Romy Vitug.

It was therefore a priviledge to have met this talented man while covering the wake of his family's matriarch Isabel Beltran Vitug
in Floridablanca, Pampanga province recently. Despite his achievements, Mang Romy remains approacheable, humble,
and gladly shared his expertise with neophytes like moi!

"ROMY VITUG ENRICHES THE MAGICAL LANGUAGE OF FILM" - Byline: Ronald G. Mangubat from The Philippine Daily Inquirer.
(Also published in the "Asia Africa Intelligence Wire" on November 23, 2002):

"ACE cinematographer Romy Vitug is so good that speculations never cease as to how he executes his excellent images.

For example, rumor has it that he has a secret mathematical formula for lighting a scene. Years ago, another top cinematographer swore that
he must have orchestrated a "little miracle" in the film lab during a movie's processing, for its visuals to acquire a different hue and texture.

Vitug laughs off the first rumor, but admits that the second has a tinge of truth to it ..."
