A young Female Groundhog, showed up in our yard in 2020.
I first noticed her in April. She must have had a male visitor in February. In May, she started to bring babies around to our front porch. The litter was seven pups!!! It was fun watching the litter grow from fluff balls into real groundhogs. Each became an identifiable individual with its own look and little mannerisms. As the Summer progressed, most of the pups eventually moved away to start its own home. By the end of October, only Mabel and two of the pups remained. They didn't go into hibernation until close to the end of November.
During the Spring, Summer, and Fall of 2020, this groundhog family taught me a lot about groundhog behavior. Mabel and her family also turned the stressful situation of being stuck at home during the Summer of World COVID into a pleasant photographer's escape to a "National Park" experience. I was lucky to have them in my life.
