KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Updated: 4:19 PM CST Jan 5, 2025
A powerful winter storm is sweeping through the Kansas City metro area, bringing heavy snowfall, strong winds, and blizzard conditions.

First Alert Live Doppler Radar shows a darker band of heavy snow moving southeast.

Winds gusting up to 41 mph reducing visibility to below a quarter-mile, creating dangerous travel conditions.

Temperatures have dropped to 14 degrees, with relative humidity at 87%, as the snow continues to fall at a steady pace.

Blizzard warnings remain in effect, with snowfall totals expected to reach 12 inches. Ice accumulation compounding the hazards in some locations.

The storm has caused power outages and further outages are expected as the system persists.

63 million Americans are under winter weather alerts as a major storm threatens much of the U.S.

City Manager Brian Platt said, “This is going to be one of the most historic, significant storms Kansas City has ever seen.”

There is nothing worse than freezing rain, unless it is freezing rain and snow. Your area really got hit. This is amazing. Hope you are warm and safe and no power loss.

For DC, anywhere between 5 and 12 inches from tonight thru Monday is forecast, the first time since we’ve been back from Riyadh that there’s been any “real” snow, possibly even since 2010, when we were snowed in for a week.
