New Mexico near Cuba
Brian and Martina hiked the length of New Mexico over 640 miles from Palomas Mexico to Cumbres Pass Colorado in April - May 2009 as part of our Continental Divide Trail thru hike. New Mexico was a wild, interesting and tough hike for us. Starting in the northern Sonoran desert with few water sources we climbed up into hills and trees in the Gila Wilderness then followed the Gila canyon upstream for about 70 miles. From there we headed over high desert with the lack of water availability being a constant threat. Northern New Mexico was lusher with jeep tracks of the south giving way to proper hiking trails and rivers, snow and distant sightings of the snow covered San Juan mountains of Colorado. We met few other hikers, but many helpful locals. The generous pioneering spirit was alive and well in New Mexico. Altogether, a great experience!
