Aspen Study #1

This image is my personal favorite of the gallery. It was taken well after sunset, in the darkening mood of a very mature grove of tall aspens. This place was very quiet. Solitary. I used my widest angle lens to achieve some separation between the foreground 'twins' and the background aspens, to enhace the lonely atmosphere of the place. The colorful ground cover seems to glow from within. I have several variants of this composition, but none are as rich or as effective as this study. I love the fact that the right third of the image is not consistent, or balanced in tone, with the left third - that there is almost an unexpected void in that area which adds tension. Another stand of white aspen trunks on the right would balance the composition a bit too well. I prefer this 'unbalanced' approach here, with the two foreground aspens lending stability and compositional foundation, and an aire of solitude.

Wonderful shot. Feels very rich and warm. Almost looks like an oil painting.

the "twin aspens" seem to act as a gateway into the lit centre of the photo;
the dark right corner adds a feeling of mystery and a desire to explore

I enjoyed your technical breakdown of this shot. I'm not sure how I'd feel if there was a grove of aspens in that right side hole. I think that either way, its a great shot. I like the subtle colors in between the foreground and background the best. The aspens up front definately anchor the image and almost make you feel that they're the kings of this grove. Very very nice job. Inspirational.
