Würzburg Residenz

The magnificent Würzburg residence from the 18th century is the city's landmark. The baroque three-wing complex was built between 1720 and 1780 by order of Johann Philipp Franz and Friedrich Karl von Schönborn based on a design by Balthasar Neumann. The magnificent building complex is a very fine example of late baroque architecture. During this time, palaces such as Schönbrunn in Vienna and the Palace of Versailles were built. The residence served as the seat of the Würzburg prince-bishops. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981, particularly the 18th-century Residenz palace, with ornate rooms, a huge fresco by Venetian artist Tiepolo and an elaborate staircase.
When the city was destroyed on March 16, 1945, the staircase, the White Hall, the Imperial Hall and the Garden Hall were preserved. The state rooms, furnished in the richest Rococo style, were restored, and the furniture and tapestries were almost completely saved. The reconstruction took almost 40 years. Of the approximately 340 rooms of the residence, 42 are now showrooms.
