It was built between 1720 and 1744 according to plans by Balthasar Neumann. The unique staircase - a single, self-supporting trough construction - reveals the genius of Neumann, who was still at the beginning of his career at the time. A large number of outstanding artists were involved in the furnishings, including the stucco artist Antonio Bossi and the most important fresco painter of the time, the Venetian Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, who created one of the largest continuous frescoes in the world in the staircase.
