The old town of Weißenburg is one of the most impressive city centers and monument ensembles in the region. Starting from a Roman settlement around the Biriciana fort - the Limes was only a few kilometers away - and first mentioned in a document in 867, the city was built around a Carolingian royal court and received the status of a free imperial city in the early 14th century, which it was able to maintain until 1802 . The historic townscape is shaped by the largely preserved town wall, the Gothic town hall, the town church of St. Andreas and the Ellinger Tor. Wikipedia
