1802 cast of the West Frieze of the Parthenon Block VIII

Figure 15 is one of the most dramatic of all the frieze. He stands on the far side of his horse, which rears in nervous excitement. As he struggles to restrain the animal, he braces his right foot against a rock and raises his left arm. The bearded head is covered with an animal-skin cap, the tail of which flies out behind. He also wears a short tunic, which is pinned only on one shoulder. The wind blows this tunic out to the right, while a cloak flies away in a flurry of folds. The head of the figure was lost some time after this cast was made.
