The Josephine Reforms of Emperor Joseph II nearly led to the cemetery's closure in 1783, as cemeteries in town centers were to be closed whenever possible. However, it was saved thanks to a petition from the local population to the Emperor. The first of several expansions took place in 1799.
In 1896, shortly after Simmering was incorporated into Vienna, the cemetery's existence was once again called into question, as the nearby Central Cemetery made the continued operation of the comparatively small local cemetery seem unprofitable. But once again, district representatives and the church succeeded in averting its threatened closure.
It comprises approximately 8,000 burial plots on an area of 56,955 m².
