I grew up on the south side of Long Island. When I got my license at 16 I used to drive out somewhere near Smithtown and down a road that led to a vacant, white what seemed like a mansion to me. It was on a peninsula overlooking I guess what was the sound. I used to drive out there and stay to day dream for hours. I loved that place, and so often I have wondered if it is still there. I don't think I'd remember how to get there as it was back in the 1950s.

My daughter has been seeking images of the Three Village area; The Setauket Mill Pond, The Setauket Green (with all the old churches surrounding it), West Meadow Beach, Stony Brook Yacht Club and harbor, Stony Brook Village Green, Port Jefferson Village, etc. Photographers always take shots of the beautiful beaches and village of the South Shore, but not much on the North Shore (except for the "gold coast"). She left after high school in 1986 but does visit friends every couple of years. Your gallery of photos are breathtaking and bring back so many wonderful memories of my youth and my children's childhood. Thank you!

i live there most of my life, and i worked for the town of islip, retired and move back to my home state, but i rrealy wish i had stayed there cause i loved it there and i think about it alot .all good freinds and co workers LI will all ways be in my heart.and i love seeing what i miss.i know life goes by fast but i will come back to visit when ever i can. thanks a million.

I have actually been on Plum Island. Got a summer job with US Dept of Agric. in 1967. We'd report to Orient Point each morning but about once a week our boss would let me and the other teen go over to the Island for half a day. We mowed lawns, unloaded trucks, did some warehouse work etc. Great experience!

I'm so grateful I encountered your website. These photos are fantastic. First rate work. And the memories these images call back...! I was brought up on Long Island, and left it when my family moved, and I enlisted for the military after High School. It wasn't until I drew closer to middle age that I began to understand how I really felt about that place, and my experiences in it. I also became re-acquainted with the interests and hobbies I acquired there, such as ornithology and watercolor painting. My father's late friend, Andrew Stasky, was a remarkable watercolor painter, and the texture of his work reminds me of my island home and its natural beauty. I look at your photos, now, with great longing, for I have planned to return to the Island and settle there again. I miss it terribly. I recall the stately Port Jefferson stacks, Mount Misery cove, the gorgeous sunsets, the autumn trees tinted vermillion, the smell of the ocean and the sound of waves lapping the dock pylons; mallards on a mill pond, blue jays carolling, and the slate-colored skies of winter and how the naked branches look against them. Not to mention the chickadees and juncos who visited our winter feeders. Winslow Homer's paintings are also a frequent favorite, and I glean through his works regularly. A copy of his "The Herring Net" hangs in my apartment. Again, thank you so much for these wonderful photos. A fine job. I shall visit this site often. It's good medicine and a good encouragement to return home! Despite the complaints I hear from some about how crowded or unpleasant the Island is, I say there is much beauty left to it; this, and a remarkable history, also. Very remarkable. Cheers.

I was born in Huntington and moved away many years ago. I have gone back to visit, like a homing pidgeon over the years for my "recharge". Long Island, even with all of the changes, has just got something...I don't know if it's the special light there that painters love, or the Bays, coves, sounds, inlets, harbors, marshes, ponds & streams, the salt air or the lush vegetation, perhaps it's the rich history. Your photos capture all of these things so well. It's nice to read that other Long Islanders feel similarly.

Wow. I have been looking for images of Long Island to show my kids how beautiful it was/is. I left there about 20 years ago and I still think about it everyday and wonder why I left. I live out west now where they say everyone wants to be but not me, I could be back on the Island tomorrow. Your work is concentrated on the area near where I grew up (Central Islip) so it was great to not just see the standard shots of the Island. I especially loved the stuff from Connetquot River State Park, Sunken Meadow (I ran cross country there!), and of course your shots of Fire Island! Again, thank you! Your photos do capture whats left of its beauty, i am also a native and remember the beautiful beaches and sailing on the Great South Bay and Gardiners Bay. As I sit here up here on the beautiful coast of Maine I am saddend by all the negative changes there. i am a canadian and have never been to new york let alone long island,and i tell you this makes me want to move there!!beautiful pics!!and are there any single men there between 50 and 65 that would like to meet an attractive {i think}canadian slim 60 year old woman.ha ha ha ,or at least bring me there for a visit.......summer or" fall "my favourite time......enjoyed the marvellous scenery of so many little townships it seems..have research this more.thank you!! cheers sameth

I agree with Guest , there is truly no place like home. I lived on L.I.'s south shore for over 40 yrs. before moving to Tampa,FL. These pictures are pulling at my heartstrings. Wish I could go back. We moved from Hampton Bays (originally from Hicksville and Smithtown) to NC. We DO NOT MISS the unbearably cold & dreary winters, impossible stagnant traffic of the LIE, sky-high inflated taxes and my in-laws...BUT how we DO MISS having the beach 7 minutes away...the vineyards...the farms in October...boating...LI Game Farm, Atlantis Aquarium in Riverhead, the best peaches, plums and corn on the cob..having THE CITY just 2 hours away and rock-climbing The Gunks. My uncle would say, living on Long Island was like moving 4 times a year without having to sell your house. Yes, he did wear rose-colored shades!!! North Carolina has NOTHING on Long Island!!

In researching lost family history I was drawn to your web site by a comment - "My Grandmother was the first baby born at the Fire Island Lighthouse". My Grandmother was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.Sherman Pearsall who were caretakers of the lighthouse . I am also a professional photographer whose subjects are quite similar. Composition and commentary are , needless to say, excellent ( Mack the Truck, Spiral, Ready for the Gardening). Totally agreeable is the capturing and feeling of Long Island in your work. I have been back to your gallery so many times. Every time, old rememberances of my 50 years on Long Island jump to life! I raised my children in Center Moriches, and even though it has been ten years since we moved to Phoenix AZ, I can still hear the seagulls, and smell the salt air. You've inspired me to take advantage of Long Island's beautiful surroundings. I've lived on LI all my life (50 this summer) and don't recall ever going into the Fire Island Light House. I will definitely do that this summer, as well as kayaking on the south shore, and a trip to Sunken Forest, and Westbury Gardens! You have a great eye and the photos are awesome! It looks like you covered much of LI, but if you ever need new subject matter, I would love to visit your site again to see photos of LI's US Coast Guard Stations. Partly because the settings are beautiful and would make great pics, but also because when I was a kid my father was the builder of the Coast Guard housing at Fire Island and Eaton's Neck stations. I was actually looking for photos of the stations when I came across your site. Thanks for the wonderful tour of LI!

Sometimes sad but always beautiful that's Long Island. Like the strange calm sheltered sound that I loved to stare at in my childhood. I am from Riverhead well actually Aquabogue but have since relocated to Orlando. My brother happens to be in Kings Park Psychiatric facility. Thanks for showing the good and the bad. The true Long Island, from the Polish town fair to the lighthouse, simply stunning. Perhaps the best part of viewing your great photos, is the number of times I can honestly say I have either sailed or walked the very places you photograph. Fishing, camping, walking on the frozen Great South Bay in February. As some others have commented on here, you don't know what you have until you move away. Great Pictures ! I grew up on Long Island between the early 50's to the late 70's. I lived in Babylon and Bay Shore, just a few miles from Robert Moses bridges. I love the shot of Montauk Surf fishing. I remember fishing there when I was about 10 with my Father and Grandfather. Thank's for the memories. Pete :-)

My grandfather was a caretaker in the Meadowcroft estate, I grew up on Middle Road across from the Sayville Inn (then a biker bar). Great photos of LI. I caught fish, crabs and turtles from the bridge on Middle Road. Grew up swimming in Lotus Lake (clean then). I wish I took photos when I was young. Great job!
