Here's that hot, grey sky again as we come into the Port of Naples. But there is something else besides; the light and the heat seem to combine to give a harsher edge to everything, almost a hyper-realistic edge. I noticed this building which I at first thought to be a company headquarters.
It isn't; the building is located on Piazza Municipio. The bottom floor has some rather low rent retail stores. To be fair, though, the area has been torn up by the building of the new Metro line so making a living in that area won't be easy until the work is done. The floors above them seem to be residential apartments. And the sign? Apparently it's just a common or garden advertising billboard advertising the Lete bottled water company. Why there? Because this side of the building is just behind and to the side of the Castello Nuovo, which we saw in previous shots, and therefore faces the port's docks. Every single passenger arriving in Napoli by ferry will see that ad.
A couple of doors down from that building (to the left) is the Teatro Mercadante (formerly the Teatro del Fondo), which was built as one of two royal opera houses in the 18th and 19th century. In 1871 it was named after the (successful enough in his time, but now little remembered) Italian composer Saverio Mercadante (1795-1870).
