Our hotel was pretty well located; from Milano Centrale it was two stops down the M2 (green) Metro line to Loreto, then change for one-stop down the M1 (red) line to Lima Station. I'm on the first leg of that here.
You'll see some older Metro carriages on the line from time to time, but as you can see there are also some modern ones especially in Milan which is probably the richest city in Italy.
Of course, the people don't seem to be excessively excited about being here; but then they live here. Like any other Metro in any other part of the world at this time of the morning the locals sit absorbed in their own world and their own thoughts about the day ahead.
