160821_063240_0017 First Looks (Sun 21 Aug 16) (The first Sunday)
Via Clituno, Roma, Lazio, Italia
This is an unremarkable shot, save that it is one of the first ones that I took in Rome. (There were no DSLRs in the old days, unfortunately, but wouldn't that have been cool?)
This is the street outside our hotel. As it was in the olden days with insulae, the way to build is generally up. At about 4.3 million people within the metropolitan area, it has significantly fewer than Sydney's 4,921,000. However Rome's is squeezed into a mere 1,285km sq while Sydney sprawls over 12,368km sq. About 8.5 times denser, give or take. In the circumstances, as it was in the Rome of old, the only way is up. Not in terms of huge skyscrapers I emphasise; there is a strict building height limit in Rome so you won't see any of those. But certainly in multi-story apartments like these.
