I think it's too easy to underestimate exactly how much thought and effort Melbourne has put into revitalising its laneways. It's likely that 40, 50, 60 years ago these were run down and dangerous places. However it can be seen that for all the (doubtless permitted) graffiti these places are clean and well maintained. That allows all of the little niche eateries to boom. In terms of urban planning and running, it's an investment that probably pays for itself many times over.
The sign to the left refers to the impending opening of a branch of Lee Ho Fook, a restaurant which is currently located in Collingwood.
