May 1 & 2 2010 Epic Flood Event for Western and Middle
Tennessee. (Information Updated 05/18/2010)
What is a 100 year flood? A 100 year flood is an event
that statistically has a 1% chance of occurring in any
given year. A 500 year flood has a .2% chance of occur-
ring and a 1000 year flood has a .1% chance of occurring.
That is quite something; bad news of course for anyone caught up in it but you can't help but be impressed at the sheer force of mother nature when she's angry.
Frightening stuff! No wonder the water couldn't disappear very quickly
we've been producing a lot of these of late - climate change could in some places skew the entire ARI pattern downwards. For instance, something built to withstand an ARI of a 75 year event 30 years ago is now looking at having to face a 40 year event, and consequently a higher probability of an even worse event than what it was built for. (That's the example for the Thames Barrier protecting London from flooding)
