Daisy

Anchorage

This evening I came across this calf and her twin brother next to the Campbell Creek bike trail. Their mother was hit and killed by a car in late June and they've been on their own since. They are in good shape physically, at least to my untutored eye, but without a mother there's no way they can survive the winter. They are one of two pair of orphan calves on the trail between Taku Lake and Arctic Blvd. I decided to call this one Daisy after seeing her nose the daisies at her muzzle.

Both of these calves survived the winter and grew to adulthood. That really surprised me. This one bawled constantly after her mother died. A year later she was still making the strange crying noise.
