20050616 / Road to the Row

Cannery Row / Monterey, CA

After watching James Dean in the 50th Anniversay Edition of East of Eden,
it's fun to visit Cannery Row. Monterey is depicted as 'the wrong side of the
tracks' where misunderstood Cal hitches trains each day from scenic Salinas
to dig up his past. If you've never seen it or haven't seen it in a
while, I'd recommend a look.

Today, it's a reversal of fortunes as Monterey is considered scenic, a
haven for tourists. Canneries and Bordellos have been replaced by a world-class
aquarium, souvenir shops and Starbucks among other things. Definitely worth a
visit whether you need to dig up your past or not.

Shadow of monsterous-sized ant with antennae.. coming to get the row.. The shadow looks human.. and more than a bit dangerous..
ahhh..East of Eden is an even better book...

Both Cannery Row & James Dean are still so well known 50 years along, which is pretty amazing when you think just how short lived his career was. Thanks for the modern day view, Chris.

Awesome shadow reaching down the street.
All back to even now. Big Mo seems to have turned.

I keep thinking the shadow looks like something from War of the Worlds.... Grin.. One of these days (hey it's summer!) I'll make it to Monterey.. I gotta visit that aquarium some day!
