Brown Bears of Katmai National Park

This Gallery Under Construction

We finally hit the road again for our first wildlife photo expedition in nearly 18 months. Our journey took us up to several locations in Katmai National Park on the Alaska Peninsular with Natural Habitat Adventures. Our target species for this trip was Alaska’s Brown Bears the much larger coastal version of the inland Grizzly Bear. With a high protein diet of Salmon these guys are some of the largest Bears on the planet reaching 1500 pounds and growing to 9 feet tall. With decades of interactions with Fly Fishermen the Bears have become somewhat habituated and take little notice of our presence.
As we move into the fall the Bears are getting fat and happy as they prepare for a long winter by constantly eating the Sockeye Salmon in the rivers we visited. Having an abundant food source the Bears take virtually no notice of our presence as they wander within several meters of us. What an amazing experience to be so up close and personal to these wild powerful giants.
