House of the Gaint

view map

Completed in 1708, Haus zum Riesen (House of the Giant), a grand three-story Baroque palace, was constructed using stones taken from the damaged towers of Heidelberg Castle. Its distinctive name is inspired by the over-life-size statue of the building's original owner, Lieutenant General Eberhard Friedrich von Venningen, which commands attention from the central stone balcony. Since mid-19th century, the palace has been owned by Heidelberg University. The chemist Robert Bunsen and the physicist Gustav Kirchhoff researched spectral analysis at this building.

A splendid view of Heidelberg’s historic Haus zum Riesen. The beautifully preserved Baroque façade, elegant symmetry and warm sandstone detailing are especially striking.....excellent perspective and clarity....V
