Heidelberg Castle

view map

The Ottheinrichsbau (Ottheinrich's Wing), located inside the inner courtyard of Heidelberg Castle. was commissioned by Prince Elector Ottheinrich von der Pfalz in 1556. The wing was tragically hollowed out by devastating fires sparked by a lightning strike in 1764. Today, it stands preserved as a spectacular, roofless shell. The facade features 16 larger-than-life allegorical statues. The lower tier depicts biblical heroes and Christian virtues (such as Joshua, David, and Strength). The upper tiers depict classical Roman deities and planetary gods.

The strong perspective of the photograph emphasizes the immense scale and intricate craftsmanship of the architecture, while the greenery softens the weathered stonework. A wonderful image of a building that remains remarkably majestic even in ruin....V
