12-03-1934 Walt Waggoner

12-03-34 5843 Self Portrait

When he drew this self-portrait in 1934, Walt Waggoner was 25 years old. For myself, a couple of striking things about this image are the hair-curl coming down over his forehead and the dress shirt with the sleeves rolled-up to a point above his elbows. Those are two characteristics about Dad that I remember lasting throughout his life. Until he retired, I don't think I ever saw my father wearing any kind of shirt but a dress shirt. He even wore a dress shirt when working around the house or in the yard. As I was growing up, I thought that was strange until I eventually came to the conclusion that Dad merely made frugal use of his shirts. When one became too frayed to wear to work, he continued to wear it at home. I never asked him why he always had on a dress shirt, just assuming that he was being careful with his money. Anyway, the hair lock, dress shirt, and of course the Clark Gable-like moustache were notable Walt Waggoner characteristics for several decades.
