Sir Stamford Raffles built his first residence on the hill where the fort is located. The residence later housed the colony's governors. By 1859 the hill took on its military role. Named after the first Viceroy of India. After the Japanese invaded, they used the fort. The letters above the gate - IHS - stand for Iota Heta Sigm, the first three letters of the Greek word for Jesus.
