This is Ron Stewart, To Bill Berg: I trained with the 49th in the States. I think we were the 2nd squad to fly over. I remember we got to Ton son Nhout around midnight and they dumped us off the C-130 out on the tarmac and said some one would be out to take us to "tent city". There were flares going off around the perimeter and gunfire in the distance. Welcome to Vietnam ! It was then we realized our M-16's were packed on the deuce and a half and not accessible. Whose idea was that? Finally someone came out and loaded our dogs and took us to tent city.
The next day our 1st squad came in and loaded our Kennel crates and dogs on their truck and escorted us to our new home at Long Binh. More tents, right next to the motor pool and lots of dust. The picture of James Roy shows our temporary Kennels: a metal frame with e tarp over it and a kennel crate installed just off the ground. The dogs had to be on chains. Food and water dishes at the limit of the chain so they wouldn't knock the over.
Some of the names I remember are Platoon Sergeant Jones, Sam Warner, Larkin, Pryor, Livingston, Oxendine, Vet Tech Lowe. I transferred in April to the 41st IPSD. Feel free to contact me. Maybe you could jog my memory.
At any rate, Thanks for your service all you brave and heroic Scout Dog Teams !
