My father (Sgt) Donnie Amason was in Vietnam from Jan 69-Jan 70 with 25th IPSD 1st Cav. He was the handler for a dog named Skipper Lou as well until he was moved to work as a Vet Tech assistant. He talked about a dog name Satan and a dog named Crazy Duke being in his platoon. He had two friends KIA in ‘69 a Junior Sweat and Kenneth (not sure the last name). He mentioned being at fire based in An Khe, Bien Hoa Tay Nihn and Quan Loi. I have a platoon picture of him with in Jungle pattern Fatigues, black beret with 25th IPSD embroidered in Gold thread, a black scroll or ribbon above the 1st Cav Div patch on his left shoulder (never could make out what it said) and Skipper Lou on leash at his side. Well all the guys on the photo were dressed the same with their dogs to be honest. Supposedly the Platoon motto was “Out front in harms way” but he always mentioned “Eyes and ears of the Cav” as well. Sorry for all the detail I am a retired Marine and we did not wear unit patches. I figured the detail would be important in recognizing his platoon. He is still alive all be it Agent Orange has taken its toll on him. I listed his address below Thanks. Donnie D. I was with the 25th I P S D . TRAINED AT Ft. Benning Georgia in 1965-1966 shipped to Vietnam with our dogs and attached to the 1st Cav. division in An khe.. Lt. Hampton was our CO. Pete Orlando---I was with the 25th IPSD from Nov. 69 to Oct. 70. Worked with Hubert for five months then became training NCO and forward area NCO. I picked up Casey Jones dog tags from the floor of the supply shed in Bien Hoa when I was issued my equipment. I still have them and would like to return them if someone has his current address.

I was the Vet Tech with the 25th IPSD from 1/26/69 to 1/25/70. I started in An Khe, then we moved to Bien Hoa with forward camps in Tay Nihn and Quan Loi. I rotated between these camps monthly. I remember Jumping Duke, Tux (our biggest dog at 90 lbs.), Tosca (Lt. Boc's dog), Yeager (Denny Herrick's dog) and many others. I wonder if any ever came back to the U.S. Maybe not, because of the IHS disease. I had to take the dogs' temps daily and put them on Tetracycline to slow it down if they had a temp. Sgt. Gary Breitigam handler of Midnight member 25th inf plt sctdog 2-14-69/ 3-13-70 attatched to the 1st cav forward area Tay Nihn rear area Bien Hoa. To Dwayne Morley welcome home brother I remember you and Mike Lister he and I went on r&r together. Was your dog Crazy Duke handled by Tom Hewitt before you or was there another crazy duke? I know he was first with the 25th inf plt but transferred out to the 46th I believe with the 25th inf. div. because he was off leash as I was but I choose to stay with the 25th IPSD. I was with the 25th IPSD from August 1967-August 1968 as squad leader/dog handler. Baron was my dog until Ron (Abe) Rogers took him over. I had the 2nd squad supporting the 2nd Bde from LZ Uplift, south of Bong Son, to LZ Jane, LZ Stud and back to LZ Jane all in I Corps. Baron was KIA July 1968, maybe sooner, and Ron was wounded. Casey Jones was in my squad and originally had Tiger. Casey came in from the field the early part of May 1968, and had been out with B Co 2/5 Cav the day before most of the company was KIA on the DMZ. At that time we were in Dong Ha headed back to LZ Jane. One thing that has always bothered me about this web site is the incorrect info about the 25th IPSD. This unit was the first Army Scout Dog unit in Rvn, arriving June 25, 1966 in AnKhe, II Corps, and did not go to the Bien Hoa area until after I left in August 1968. The first unit KIA, Sp Katrinas(Sp) is not even listed on the KIA list. SGT Eubanks, 1st Squad, and Sp Elia, 2nd Squad, were both killed in the Bong Son area , II Corps area before we ever moved to I Corps during January 1968. I was an instructor at FBG until January 1972 when I went over to a specialized unit to train and handle one of the first drug dog units that trained and handled drug dogs as an unit traveling throughout the Southeast working our dogs. I retired in 1993 after 29 years as a CW4 Senior Special Agent with the CID.

As Harold said, that Unit patch was for th 25th Infranty not the 25th IPSD we were attached to the 1st Cav!!!!!

I also was handler of a crazy dog named Duke in 1968. We was in the north part of So. Viet Nam (Quang Tri, Khe Sanh & Dong Ha ) . Duke was with the orignal 25th. Scout Dog Platoon that landed in Nam in June of 65. There was only 6 of the orignal dogs still alive when I got there Jan. 1968. I met Dwayne Morley in Bien Hoa in May of 69 , I was an instructor then. My name is Casey Jones , Longmont Colorado

I also was handler of Tux and "Crazy" Duke,..... Harold Marks.. all of 70. Got the Malaria while on extension leave,wouldn't let me go back. That 25th patch,was for the 25th Div "Electric Strawberry" Not the 25th IPSD. Hi,Ron LeBeau Who did I give that leg Knife Too ?

I was in the 25th IPSD from May '69 - April '70. There was no patch; it was a shoulder ribbon with " The eyes and ears of the 1st Cav ". I remember Mike Lister; at the time he was a Corporal. We had our rear area in Bien Hoa and the forward area was in Tay Ninh. I handled " Crazy " Duke.

Yes, Gary Zemel is right, 25 IPSD had no patch the one that is shown is the 25th Infantry, Mike Hughes "Jumping" Duke 25 IPSD 1970
