Just outside of Austin is the iconic 360 Bridge, also called Pennybacker Bridge. The Bridge is named after Percy Pennybacker, a bridge designer for the Texas Highways Department. The 360 Bridge is made of 600,000,000 pounds of steel, finished with a weathered rust to blend into the hill country colors. It was finished and dedicated in 1982. The bridge is designed so no part of it touches Lake Austin (really a stretch of the Colorado River that has been dammed beneath it) and is suspended by 72 steel cables.
The waters beneath Pennybacker Bridge are popular with fishermen and boater alike. The bridge also has a bike lane allowing bicyclers and pedestrians to cross the river.
