In color, this image is a warm family snapshot. In black and white, it was more of a social study -- these people become representatives of something larger than this family in black and white. They are symbols of a young middle class family, happy, but up against a barrier -- a brick wall -- that might stand between them and their dreams. In color, the brick wall warms up and seems no longer as symbolic as it was in stark black and white. They are more real, more human, in color. No longer are they symbols of a larger idea. They are just Maria and Calixto and their child.
