November 2025: A few days on the road in northern Tasmania created an opportunity to explore the 'Ultima Thule' of the island state's far northwest, from Launceston west to Wynyard - where my immigrant great-grandparents took up land in the 1880s - then on to Marrawah, where lush dairyfarming country gives way to rocky coasts. Here, Mt Cameron West (Preminghana) is the hub of an ancient Tasmanian Aboriginal (palawa) meeting place. Farther south lies the Arthur Pieman Conservation Area, conserving part of the Tarkine wilderness.
In May 2021, Barbara and I rediscovered old favourites including the charming fishing township of Stanley, nestled beneath the distinctive volcanic plug known as The Nut and further down the coast, the town called Penguin. We turned inland to venture down towards the historic mining town of Waratah (today a village, at best).
These images were captured either with Nikon D300 or with Samsung Galaxy phone.
