Tasmania's West Coast Wilderness Railway (or simply Abt Railway) originally a vital access route for the remote mining town of Queenstown to the port of Strahan, now operates largely as a tourist excursion train but faces closure in 2013 unless capital can be found. The railway incorporates a rack-and-pinion system invented by Dr Roman Abt of Switzerland, enabling it to climb the range between the two towns. We boarded at Queenstown for the westbound journey to Regatta Point, on Macquarie Harbour near Strahan.
