I have been asked by a client to photograph some gemstones. Much harder than you would think. You will probably see more of them as I get them done. Any suggestions or comments would be most helpful. I am looking for ways to shoot them. I have tried black velvet but man does is show dust!! I am using hot lights for now, my Alien Bees will be here Friday but I will need to learn how to use them.

The output is for the web. My client is going to sell these and some custom Jewelry on ebay. One or two images might go out as postcards.

Flourite gems are they not? beautiful shot.

I have filmed gems in the past using semi-sheer fabric in a contrasting colour draped over a light-table. The fabric lessens the intensity of the light-table but still allows the light to refract through the gems. It may work for your situation also.

Have you tried contrasting colored backgrounds, for these stones perhaps green?

I like this but the focus is not on the gems. I can see the dificulty with this. I like this shot overall.
