When I was about 5 living in northern Indiana, I found a very large green caterpillar. It was about 3-4 inches long, and fat. If I remember correctly, it had big circles on its back, like maybe four of them, and I think they were yellow circles with an orange circle in the middle. I picked it up, and immediately dropped it, because these cactus needle type spines that weren't on it when I first saw it were protruding from the circles. I may be remembering some of this wrong, but that really hurt. Know what it was?

Today I found a chocolate brown hairless caterpillar on my doorstep in southern VA, so I don't know what it's normal diet is. It doesn't have stripes or checkers, but does have 2 little yellow stripes on top of its head. I took a picture, but don't think I can send it from my android phone.

I was working in the yard when I heard this "plop, plop, plop" sound. When I investigated, I found that about 45 caterpillars had fallen from my oak tree. This happened four more times in the space of about an hour - hundreds had fallen! It was about 2" in length with vertical black and white stripes and orange feet. Hairy. Stuck to my glove when I picked one up. I have searched the web but cannot find it. Oh, I live in upper South Carolina.

Help!! I adopted a caterpillar from my backyard and I made it w home. I gave it leaves from its host plant and it eats. However, I have no idea what species it is. Lucky is a brownish reddish caterpillar and is about 1 or 2 cm long. I believe lucky is a moth but I honestly have no proof except for one thing. Today, I found lucky buried in the soil BUT I highly doubt she/he was pupating. This is becuz half of lucky's upper body was above the soil and half her under body was buried in it. I'm not sure if she was pupating or just plain stuck. I kinda poked around and unburied her/him and I'm not sure if that was the right thing to do. PLEASE HELP

We have been finding 1" (at full extension) black, hairless, caterpillars/worms with brown heads that appear at night, actively moving around on the carpet of our downstairs family room. They are the thickness of spaghetti and have three sets of light colored front legs. I can't find pictures of them anywhere. Anyone else here have them or know what they are?

I just found a huge caterpillar in my pond’s skimmer basket. It is dead so coloration is difficult but my quess is it would have been reddish brown or green or a combination. But here is what it looks like. It is about 6 inches long, cigar diameter, with a lateral cream colored green rimmed spot one per body segment per side . It has a pair of prominent horns on the first and second body rings after the head; after that the horns get smaller although the last body ring seems to have one prominent horn The hair is very wiry, and although somewhat sparse it is more prominent on the dorsal side. But here is the part that catches my eye. On it’s posterior is a triangular boney type structure that looks like it has teeth with in the triangle. I live in Dresher pensylvania. Our property is bordered by a riparian environment. It is a maple-beech climax forested area with lots of black walnuts, there is little farming in our area. I am a retired high school / college biology teacher and have never seen this guy. Got any ideas of what this is?

Thanks for the site! I have identified the Eastern Tent caterpillars we have but not quite an exact match of the green giant we found eating the leaves of a young maple tree. Approx 2 1/2 to 3 inches, big green eyes, fat green body, brown toes (?) and a couple very light brown vertical stripes on the body. Hopefully it will be there when the sun comes up and we can get a better look and look here again. Thanks again from southeast PA! Just saw a large 3-4 " caterpillar orange red color with small yellow side spots ringed in green. It was on a bike path btn Jackson and Concord MI. Very segmented body . grey -black vertical stripes one down the center of the back one on each side. Three yellow triangular protuberances at the back end. tufts of yellow hair. ??? what was it?? Wish I had had my phone charged to get a picture.

Thank you for your extensive effort in compiling this amazing collection of moth caterpillars; it has allowed me to come the closest I ever have to identifying a couple of unusual samples I've found living in South America. Are there other sources where I could look to get even closer? A couple of photos in your collection come close in shape and size, but the colouring is different. Is that simply an individual variation, or would that be a different variety of caterpillar altogether?

I just found a hairy caterpillar on my balcony potted plant. Carrots and corn, and the black swallowtail butterflies have now hatched and flown away. I don't know where this one came from, only one, and doesn't seem happy in the tub. what is it and what does it eats? It is light brown furry and has a green body and orange head which is not furry, from the neck on. the rest is furry. Fantastic grouping and index. The caterpillars I am looking for are two centimeters full grown and as youth remain together under leaf in spiral formation resting. They have strong strong front legs and are weak rear legged. Often end up on front legs only as matured caterpillars. Funny to watch when they are moving. They Were eating pagoda Dogwood. Don't think they are a butterfly.

My grandson and I found an unusual caterpillar in our back yard, (NC) and it looks almost identical to the spiny oak slug, except, ours is a translucent white color, with black dots in the squares on the back, and small circle sections on the sides. It is about the size of a penny lengthwise, and seems to have more spines. The spines are all over the entire body, are thick like horns and we can barely make out the thin spines that generate out from the thick spines. It feels kind of rubbery, and when my grandson placed it on my leg, it left a burning, then itching sensation after he picked it up. We are happy to have found your site and will visit again. I will likely visit your site with all of my grandchildren, and perhaps even my future students.

What a wonderful site and sight! I am trying to identify a caterpillar that is eating up all of a particular, light green, thin leafed ground cover in my yard - but not any of the plants surrounding that cover. It looks like a 7915 - White-dotted Prominent - Nadata gibbosa for it's milky green color. This one has no yellow stripes or red dots on the sides, and has a white underbelly. Its head is opaque white and has a black stripe that starts where it meets the body and ends in a sharp point in the middle of two round eye-like raised dots. Love to know if it is a native or invasive! And if it is wise to leave it alone.

I found what is either a worm or catapillar ? It was in a mixture of old wet horse manure - (i was trying to make solid to walk on) After 3 days rain i removed wood that was over it- It was Clear - chubby fat ! An dark at one end- once exposed it worked back into the ground. Wish i had chickens !

We found a very unique catepillar that I can't find a match for on the internet. I live in the Adirondacks of northern New York. This fella is about 3 inches long, tan, with white raised knobs that look more like short spikes near the head. It also has some white hair scattered on its very smooth, fat body. The head and tail end look very similar and it reacts when touched by bringing its tail end around like it might sting? I'd love to send you a picture to find out more. Thanks!

I seen an amazing caterpillar on the Maryhill canal Glasgow about 2-and a half inches long dark leopard color and like a little horn on his back, I lifted it off the road to the side and it could really cling onto the card. pretty amazing. I'm in Tahoe, Sierra Nevada. Today we found a large caterpillar- about 4 inches long & pretty chubby! Not sure what he may be growing into. He was banded -alternating a dark brown/green with a yellow/green. He also had long white stripes down his length. A brick red/brownish head and red feet. I saw a catterpillar In Spain yesterda and was trying to identify it, you don't have a picture of it in your collection. It was quite large about 5/6cm, very bright light green colour with 10 black and orange striped rings and was feeding from a wild fennel plant. I was wondering if you knew of this species? I was washing out some brocoli and there appeared before me a black bodied with white horizonal stripes and yellow bellied catipllar with very slight fuzz. I am curious as to what kind it is. Let me first say "Bravo" your site is breathtaking in its extensiveness. I was not able to locate the caterpillar in my possession, however and I am anxious to identify it because I would like it to metamorphosize in the cup I have provided for it. It is wooly and brown with an oh so tiny wooly tail. I found it attached to th watering can which drips water into my bird bath. When I say it is wooly I mean that the wool is dense without spaces between the hairs as in some of the woolies. It is totally light brown in color. Will you answer me directly to my e-mail?

I found a caterpillar at the lake that was bright yellow. It looks like a face on it. It has black marking for the eyes and above it is what looked like marking for ears and looking straight at it it looked like a smiling mouth. It was the cutes thing I every saw. When we put a stick down and got it on it it put out a odor that was a sweet smell. I have a pictue of it. It was approx 1 and 1/2 inches long. Some one thought it was a horn devil but it didn't have any horns.

I found a hawk moth caterpillar yesterday near my grape plant. It's beige with white slashes. It looks to be missing it's thorn on it's tail and looks like a button. I would love to share a picture of it since I never found one like mine on the web.

Awesome collection! I took a picture of something and cannot identify it. May I send you the pict? It looks like a white fuzzy worm with green horizontal stripes, red legs with yellow and purple wings. It has fuzzy antenna. Thanks for any input.

Here is a shot in the dark - in October I found a greenish caterpillar eating the leaves on one of my trees. It had a fat head and a few bristles coming out of its back. I thought it might be a prominent. I put it in a bug box. It didn't do anything but crawl around. Eventually, I read where some caterpillars build cocoons out of dead wood. I added some wood chips and it glued two of them together (while it was inside). I let it sit for about a month with no luck. Then I pried it open to discover the pupae inside was still alive. After 4-5 months, a dark gray (smallish) moth emerged. Its antennae are not "fluffy" like some moths and there are a few blackish mottlings on its wings. I live in NW Missouri. Any guesses? Sorry, I don't have a good way to upload a pic. Thanks in advance for ay help.

anyone seen any newly hatched tussock caterpillars yet? Feb is usually when they start to come out and we're seeing some unidentified red rashes after school but haven't seen any tiny baby caterpillars yet. Have any been seen elsewhere?

I found a Hickory Horned Devil today, almost 6 in long. It has to be one of the scariest Caterpillars I've ever seen. Any advice on caring for it? I'd like to keep it until it pupates.

I was camping at Baker Lake Resort in Skagit County on Mt. Baker and found a bright yellow green striped caterpiller without hair. It was similiar in size and the mouth looked like 7758. Are you familiar with this species?

We have a huge green caterpillar on the front of our building in Topeka KS... light green - 5-6" long, about a nickle diameter w. florescent blue/green and pink dots? What is it. No horns....

We found several caterpillars that we think are luna moth or sphynx caterpillars. They were about as long and thick/wide as my index finger, very green with a thorn/sticker/stinger at one end and they looked like they had big dark eyes on top at the other end. We couldn't tell if they really were eyes or just "coloring to look like eyes". They were wild looking! They also had totally cleared the leaves off several of our potted plants. The next day there were lots of little green "worms" all over the 2 pots and still several of the big ones were there. What are they??? I thought Luna Moths were rare? Are they? THanks!

Ev, I was raised in Southern Ind.to work in tobacco fields. We would find those worms everywhere so we just called them Tobacco Worms. Does anyone have any info on how to care for a Woolly Bear Caterpillar during the winter? (what to give it to eat, temp., etc.) I found one on my back porch and would like to keep it alive then turn it loose in spring.

We found a large caterpillar at Lake Cumberland in Kentucky. I have watched the slide show and did not see this one. It was about 3 inches long, about a half inch girth, was bright light green (sort of neon lime) with two kinds of protrusions -- bright blue thorn-like spikes and yellowish-orange toadstool shapes. The skin was dry and not shiny at all. Does anyone know what this was?

I raise moanrch caterpillars. i recently found a milkweed tussock moth caterpillar. it was next to the monarch. the were touching eahothre they were that close! I also have raised Luna moths, yellow bears, wooly bears, inch worms, and a sphynx that have a red tail
