Red-breasted Nuthatch, ocean-going

Pacific Ocean, near the Farallons

This bird flew in across the open ocean and landed on the mast of the boat carrying a load of happy pelagic birders on a Shearwater Journey's, October 7, 2012, near the South Farallon Islands, more than thirty miles from our port of origin, Half Moon Bay. Debi let out a hoot as if she'd spotted a Short-tailed Albatross. The bird lingered with us long enough for everyone to get a look and take a picture, then flew off toward the Farallons.
