Underneath the sandstone cliffs of the Eastern Free State lie many fertile farms and some of them have magnificent sandstone homesteads and sheds surrounded by shady trees and terraced, manicured gardens, reminiscent of a bygone age. Here are some of my favourites in this area, including a new one recently built that echoes the cliffs behind it and blends in so beautifully with the surrounding terrain that from a distance one can barely see it.
