Owner Krysia Back speaks of how she fell in love with the big skies and untamed landscape of the Eastern Free State. She and her husband Oliver Back, commissioned award-winning architect Johan Bergenthuin to create a modern version of a farmhouse and a space that could encompass the surrounding vistas of the Maluti mountains - sometimes snow-capped - and the ever-changing light.

"I love watching the sky change as a storm rolls in and stretches away from me. There are little jakkal and deer that pass through. An eagle's nest on the krans. The mountain behind us aglow in an orange sunset. A star-encrusted night sky - views that bring me great joy and serenity. The large windows in the house were designed to frame these views so you always feel part of the surrounding landscape. Many trees have been lovingly planted and an indigenous garden built.
