Sable Island National Park

Sable Island lies 300km southeast of Halifax, Nova Scotia. It is Canada's newest national park. The narrow sandbar is shaped like a crooked smile and is 42km and 1.5km wide. It is also known as the graveyard of the Atlantic.
Sable Island is home to a few breeding birds as well as being a stopover for many migratory birds on their way to the north. Grey seals also breed and raise their pups here.
The vegetation is varied. No trees grow here and there is a widespread coverage of marram grass as well as other wildflowers.
The island is best known for its wild horses which number around 400 but can vary depending on weather and food availability. The horses receive no care whatsoever and are left to fend for themselves. No human contact is allowed and visitors must remain about 20m away from the horses.
I was able to visit the island in June of 2016 on the Ocean Endeavour. All landings were weather and seas dependent as we used zodiacs to go from the ship to the island.
In all, it was a wonderful trip.
