The Fishmongers
by Helen Betts

Naha, Okinawa, Japan

I got to know these ladies at the machigwa, or central market, in Naha. I actually put this picture into a guidebook on Okinawa that I edited and brought them a copy of it; they were thrilled.

Very cool shot - amazingly colorful fish!

Thank you Karen and Isabel for the comments. I can't remember now what the blue fish is called but it's quite common in Okinawa and is definitely eaten. I was simply amazed the first time I set foot in the market by the absolute rainbow of fish for sale -- for a sampling, go tohttp://www.pbase.com/helenpb/colors_of_okinawan_cuisine -- and even more so since I don't eat fish at all. There are many nationalities living in Okinawa so the woman could be Korean, but personally, with her working in the oldest, most traditional fish market there, I somehow doubt it. And yes, lighting was quite difficult, to say the least! Helen

Beautiful picture. What a magnficent fish! When I first looked at the two ladies I was convinced that the lady on the left was Korean. I guess I was wrong.

A very fancy fish! What kind is it? It looks like one you should keep in a garden pool instead of eating it! A great shot in what I imagine was not very good lighting conditions.
