Thanks everyone; I'm quite surprised at how much comment this has attracted! It was just a quick shot with on-board flash which didn't look all that pretty on its own (they rarely do ;-)). I guess what we're finding (I didn't plan this!) is how the border and text distracts from that harsh lighting, for a pleasant enough result overall -- the whole being greater than the sum of the parts, and all that... Rest assured it was more luck than judgement! - Mike

Very nice card Mike and I love the "Bottlebrushes" plant. I could use that plant to clean some of the bottles in my collection :) I like your text and the frame too. Very nice indeed.

Very nice light on this, Mike, and a very Australian-looking greeting. I think you did a good job with the fence -- actually like the muted look. Helen

Season's greetings to you, too, Mike! Clever how you mitigated that fence background. The desaturation actually work out well to support the image. Love the green and red colors - very seasonal!

Mike, thanks for the added info...yep, it sure does look like a bottle brush...a beautiful bottle brush :) Ohhh, yeah, I'll keep quiet about the background. MFC

Thanks Jerry and MFC. It was really just a quick grab of a plant that's been growing (struggling for years, to be more accurate) beside my driveway. As I keep saying, I don't have much of an 'eye' for a photo subject but this was kind of yelling "why not!?" at me as Christmas approached ;-) And don't let on (shhh!) but the blurred background is a Colorbond fence, desaturated in the hope that it might look more like an interior curtain! ;-)

Mike C: The plant is a Callistemon viminalis -- one of a number of Australian natives commonly called Bottlebrushes (now who'd have guessed?).http://www.anbg.gov.au/callistemon

Very simple and effective image, Mike. Would have fit well in the last challenge as well ;-)

Mike , this is a very interesting plant...unusual structure and seasonal colors. Nice spot lighting on the plant and good background contrast in color and DOF. It makes a very nice photo for a seasonal greeting. MFC
