Hi guest. I disagree with you on this one. I think it was clever the way Mike focused all the 'action' in the bottom left corner, and yet centered the head in a very homogenous OOF background (and with that dark central band, it almost looks like a bug 'portrait'). I believe that this is one of those cases where the composition 'rule of thirds' 1) is not a rule, but a guideline and 2) the central 3rd is still a 3rd . -John(ebones)

I'm going to be completely honest here. This picture is not very good. It is sharp, I will give you that. But, the composition is very centered and the subjects body is cut off. It looks as if it was taken indoors = controlled settings + flash. The aperture was f16 which means the DOF is actually very wide/deep. The praying mantis is even in a defensive position. There is nothing special about this image.

Very good capture, Mike! I think it's perfect for this challenge. I love it's expression and the way it was naturally framed by the blurred background.

I love this shot - great color and clarity, and the background is perfectly blurred! I love the expression on his face, too.
