The Unveiling I
by Ann Chaikin

New York City

Today at the Museum of Natural History in the Teddy Rosevelt Garden, un unveiling took place of the Nobel Monument. This monument has been four years in the making. It commemorates all of the American winners of the Nobel Prize. In the picture are the Mayor of New York City, the Crown Prince of Norway, two representatives of Sweden, a representative of the US government, Director of New York parks and a winner of the Nobel Prize pulling off the golden cover to reveal the monument. It was by good fortune that we found out about the ceremony and were able to attend. My father is one of the people whose name is inscribed on this monument.

Johnebones, it was in Berkeley that Dad did the research that won him the award. He was at UC Berkeley from the late 30s until the mid 70s. He was a professor of physics and director of the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory at the end of his career. I grew up in the Bay Area. :) Ann

Ann, sorry, I missed the reference to your Dad. What a great honor. I'm lucky enough to live in a place where both state and city have elements named after them (Californium, Berkelium). Congratulations. -johnebones

How fortunate, Ann, that you were able to attend a ceremony with special meaning for you! This is a nice series of photos; I especially like the drape of the cloth in the first picture. Bev

Wow, I'm impressed! You're very lucky to be visiting NY at the right time.

Yes he did, Katherine, in 1951. He shared the Nobel Prize in chemistry with Glen Seaborg for discovering Neptunium and Plutonium. His name is Edwin McMillan. He passed away in 1991. It was just luck that we found out about this ceremony. My cousin whom we were visiting lives very close to here and she knew about the monument but not when it was going to be unveiled. She found out this morning when walking her dog that it would be today and asked if we could attend. They agreed and so we did.

Really interesting series, great capture. It looks like you had a good vantage point above the crowd. I especially like the 3rd shot with the billowing cloth. -johnebones
