Painted Buntings - South Llano River State Park, TX

Thank you for visiting. These pictures were taken at mid June this year. If you are in the south central Texas area and want to see painted bunting, South Llano River State Park is the place to go. At the bird blind, painted buntings show up none stop. Plus other neat birds like black-throated sparrow, lark sparrow, yellow-breasted chat, orchard oriole, canyon towhee and verdin. Select "Original" to get better picture quality.

Soon after I moved into a new house in Alamo Heights area, a gorgeous male visited my feeders non-stop for two days, Apr. 22-24, 2014. First sighting! Truly a gift. I can't complain his stay was so short.

Carol, I think your painted buntings migrated down south. It's the Fall migration time again. Hope you will see them next Spring!

Two pair of Painted Buntings along with their offspring have been daily visitors at my backyard feeder since about mid April. By daily I mean every few hours of daylight I have enjoyed their activity. Then this past Thursday, August 9, 2012, they disappeared and have not returned. What could have caused them to move on? Where do they go?

Chris, it's truely a blessing to have nesting painted buntings near by! I have tried to attract these beauties to my backyard (they pass by during migration) and have seen 1 or 2 female or juv in the past 3 Spring. And having a roadrunner in the backyard - that's too wild for me to dream for :)

Yay!! It is a sight to behold !! The male and female return every day now and there are also male and female offspring visiting each day that are not yet as shy. They like the white millet and enjoy a drink of clean water. Their nest is in one of the black walnut trees in the natural area that borders our property. On another and unrelated note, an actual Roadrunner hopped onto my patio yesterday and I managed to get its picture pecking at my potted bougainvilleas!!

Just saw my first Painted Buntings (male & female) and being a complete amateur bird watcher I had no idea what I was looking at until I looked them up on your web site. Having them grace my feeders is a blessing indeed - I live just outside Oatmeal, Texas about 40 miles from Llano.

Helotes, Tx - First spotted the pale green female at my bird feeder and then the stunning male arrived at 7:30 pm. They ate some small bird seed and drank water from a nearby water dish. What a surprising gift to get to see them. The male returned a little while later for more seed. I will add another feeder tomorrow with the white millet seed to try to keep them here this season.

We have had two painted buntings at our bird feeder all day in central Austin. They are beautiful Heads seem a little darker than photos we've seen.

We had a pair all summer long last year (2010) on the North Shore of Lake Travis, and are hoping for their return this year! Very shy & they don't stay long at the feeder.

There was one beautiful male in our back yard in Round Rock on Sunday, April 26. He landed on a pot and sat for a while, and then flitted on past. Absolutely stunning!

I live in central Austin and three male buntings graced my yard this weekend. They were eating all kinds of grass and weed seed (I don't 'maintain' my yard); but what they seemed most interested in was the ragged pile of pecan brush. They loved the snarl of dry old sticks. I may keep it there!

My husband and I saw our first today in our yard in the Canyon Lake area. It was truely magnificent! They really area beautiful. I have noticed that my sunflower seeds are disappearing quickly from my feeder, since they are in the cardinal family....is it possible they are the reason...or do they really stick to the smaller seed.

I live just outside Killeen, Texas and have seen 2 males in my backyard for the past 3 years. I haven't seen the female yet this year. I just read that they like white millet seeds so off to Lowe's for another feeder and seed. Right now they're eating a commercial songbird mix. I just want to be sure they have whatever they want. What a blessing they are!!!!

thank you for the beautiful photos. Painted Buntings used to come to my bird feeder . I sometimes see them in the bird bath. I decided to purchase some finch food to see if that attracts them...Sue Piner , new braunfels,texas.
