We got permits to start an 8 day loop from Tuolumne Meadows on Saturday, 10/3. The weather forecast was for a 20-30% chance of snow on Sunday-Monday, and then fantastic weather after that so the odds were in our favor! We planned to hike up to Young Lakes, then cross-country to Roosevelt Lakes for 2 nights. Then we would cut over to McCabe Lakes and head up toward Smedberg Lake and then down Rogers Canyon to Pate Valley, finally going out to Glen Aulen and out. We made it to Roosevelt Lake and on Saturday night it began snowing and continued off and on (mostly on) throughout the next day while we hunkered down in the tent for 37 consecutive hours. Overnight lows on Sunday were below 0, but our gear was up to the test and we stayed cozily warm. We made the decision to hike back to the car on Monday mainly because of concerns on how treacherous the trail could become in spots after a few days/nights of warming up and refreezing. Oh well - we will try again next year, but maybe in September instead!
This black bear was beside the road on the way to Tuolumne Meadows.
