Day 4: Sunset Lake to Lower Paintbrush Canyon via Hurricane Pass and Paintbrush Divide

Woke up this morning to a fog-enveloped basin, so we were glad we made the trek up to Hurricane Pass yesterday. When we reached the pass today, we could barely see the Tetons through the clouds. There was still quite a bit of snow on the east side of the pass, and we saw more bear tracks. Cascade Canyon was beautiful. Today was scheduled to be a fairly short day - our permit called for us to camp in North Fork Cascade camping zone, but we decided to plug on over Paintbrush Divide today and camp on the other side so that our last day would be shorter. (we hadn't seen any other campers yet, so figured it wouldn't cause a problem.) Once we reached the trail junction coming from Jenny Lake, the trail was like the interstate with quite a few dayhikers heading up to Lake Solitude. The views looking back down the canyon to Grand Teton were superb! By the time we reached the lake, low clouds were swirling around and as we started the excrutiatingly long climb up to Paintbrush, the weather continued to get worse. One we reached the top, views were minimal. Dropping into Paintbrush Canyon, the trail was very snowy and rather scary in spots. We were very glad to be doing this in the afternoon when the snow was soft, rather than tomorrow morning in icy conditions! Campsites in Upper Paintbrush were very exposed, so we continued to trudge on down to the Lower camping zone, finally reaching the first marked site after a short 11 hours of hiking. Total miles today - an insane 15.9 over two passes, with elevation gain of 3540, and loss of 5190.
