Luckily, we had purchased new Feathered Friends sleeping bags for this trip, and we stayed toasty warm last night - despite temps around 20 degrees. Clear skies this morning - woohoo! Snow was generally about 4" deep, but deeper in drifts which made the going harder than normal. We made it up to Fox Creek Pass and the views from Death Canyon Shelf were superb. One person had trekked this way the day before, so finding the trail wasn't difficult but there were long stretches along the exposed Shelf where snow had obliterated the footprints. Still, we had no difficulty finding the route. The sun was out and the temps made it into the upper 40's - great hiking. We made it to Meeks Pass and down into beautiful Alaska Basin shortly after lunch. Our plan was to camp two nights in the basin, so we continued on over to Sunset Lake on the far side. We had the place to ourselves - well, there were no other people around, at least. The bear tracks we found near our campsite let us know that there were other creatures in the area! We traveled 8 miles today, with an elevation gain of 1100' and loss of 300'.
