US 50 the Loneliest Highway in America a 07_17_05.jpg

Today I went for a drive out across the Great Basin Desert on US 50 which is know as the loneliest highway in America. Once you get west of Delta, Utah it sure is true. From Delta to Fallon Nevada this is pretty much the view. In the summer the sun bakes the desert. In the winter it is bitter cold. For some reason I love these empty spaces.

A compressed landscape from the same location which is just about the Nevada border.

Some high power lines that stretch across the desert.

Back when the speed limit was 55 on hwy 50, a Nevada state trooper clocked us in our RX-7 at 84 mph. He was kind and recorded 64 on the ticket. His vehicle was one of just a few we saw on that stretch. Beautiful photo Bill!

No special magic!??? This is an award winning image Bill. I have driven this road several times, and you have done a magnificent job of capturing the true flavor of the openness and beauty. The sun is an added bonus. Outstanding work and GMV.

Jim, I justed stopped way down to get plenty of depth of field and then I had a Cokin P series two stop graduated neutral density filter. The grade was adjusted to start right at the horizon. Really no special magic for this picture.

It looked good both in color and B&W. I think the B&W just feels more desolate and hot.

Looking at this again I have to ask how you got this? Looking straight into the sun you have really good detail in the foreground. I'm guessing ND filter's (I'm totaly guessing here because I don't own any and have never used any) or a polerizer, (another guess, I know they're supposed to be used at 90 degrees). Just trying to learn.

Bill, this looks like my dream highway. I drive a big rig for a living but I rarely get more than 150 miles from Seattle, so I am always in heavy traffic. This looks like a nice drive to me, as long as you don't mind talking to yourself you're never lonely.(maybe that explains my strange sense of humor). So what are you doing out in the middle of nowhere?

I like this one alot...you can feel the heat of the road from the sun...one road you don't want to break down on...good work
